Definitions

Data are based on the National Curriculum for England. Children in key stage 1 are between the ages of 5 and 7. This covers years 1 and 2 in primary school. Children in key stage 2 and between the ages of 7 and 11. This covers years 3 to 6 in primary school.

Data based on academic school year (September to August). The date on the X axis is the start of the academic year. Figures before 2016 are not comparable to figures from 2016 onwards due to a change in assesments.
